Air Alert Week 5

Finished another week of Air Alert. Results felt good, but I didn't have time to measure them. I played ball friday and seemed much quicker though. Im thinking of doing burnouts unilaterally so i can get more work out of each leg. Oh and everyone who complains about knee pain or hurts knee from air alert are stupid. How bout just add another rug? My knee wasn't feelin bad but the ground was shaking alot during my workouts. I just took a rug from the bathroom and did my workout on that problem so…

2.5 inches in 3 weeks/ AA week 4

Im startin my fourth week of Air Alert tomorrow. Im on pace for my 40 inch vert. Today was gonna be my first time measuring vert since before AA. I hurt my back 1st week and 2nd week my back was hurttin and there was snow in my driveway. At the beginning i was only gettin about 1.5 inches more, which i wouldve been happy with. i kept jumping and suddenly i just got so much higher. I tried again and got close to the same height I measured it and a 2.5 inch increase. IM on my way to a 12.5 inch in…

What's In a Name?

Dunk. Slam Dunk. Slam. Jam. Slamma-jamma. Cram. Stuff. Throw down. Posterize. Boom-shak-a-lacka. Then there's the windmill, tomahawk, double-clutch, rock-the-baby, 360, alley-oop, and behind-the-head. People who have dunked are said to have the hops, to have skyed, flown, walked on air, climbed the ladder, gotten up and gotten sick with it. They've had air time, hang time and given someone a facial.

Home run. Homer. Tater. Four-bagger. Slam. Blast. Par…

Miraculous season finish

I entered my freshman basketball season on the Rye J.V. team not knowin wat to expect. I was the best player on the team, and I'm probably gonna start at the 2 next year on varsity. Rye is in Westchester NY. We don't have the best overall league, but we have 2 of the top public Highscool teams. Peekskill and Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon contains amazing history in their program. Produced 11 NBA players! I don't remember many but Ben Gordon went to

Low Flying Objects

So they're saying that this year's NBA Slam Dunk Contest was the best ever. It certainly was impressive. Gerald Green set a cupcake and candle on the back of the rim, lit the candle, jumped up, blew out the candle and dunked. That, of course, is the dunk I've been training to do, so, thank you Mr. Green, now I have to think of something else. That was followed by Dwight Howard donning a Superman cape and flying so hig

La Dunk

If I were a 51-year-old WOMAN who was able to dunk a basketball, I would be the next president of the United States. What makes me say this? Recently, a video of a 6-foot-8 high school girl dunking during a game made the ABC Evening News. When a 6-foot-8-inch man dunks, it does not make the news. Unless it's a particularly spectacular dunk, it won't even make a local sportscaster's highlight reel. A 6-foot-8-inch man might, however, make the news if he were NOT able to dunk. Such are a man's…

Air Alert week 2

Just finished week 1 of air alert. It was great. No knee pain. The only problem I had, was that i coudn't measure my gain cause I had back strain(unrelated to air alert) that has happened before in the past year. If anyone knows anything I can do to strengthen my back, please tell me. Still, playing at the Y with my friends. I felt an extra boost in my jumping. I felt like I was jumping higher. And I was. Unluckily I could not measure my gain that i was to measure monday because i hurt my bac…

Growing Up

Growing old and growing up, of course, are two different things. You can do one without doing the other. It's not advisable, but it happens. In attempting to dunk a basketball at the age of 50, my aim is to preserve a sense of physical vitality and longevity. I need to believe that the end is nowhere in sight. But because my goal involves a basketball, I suppose it's possible to assume that I am also attempting to forestall the aging process emotionally, to maintain that eager immaturity that…

I just started my Air Alert workout today. I tested my vert, 27 inches. The program guarantees 8 inches. I will start to dunk in 4 inches. My goal is to gain 13 inches so I can reach the 40 inch plateau. I am hoping to dunk by possibly the fifth week, but if it doesn't go well hopefully the eighth one. I am going to keep people posted with my gains. I

Old Man Take a Look at Yourself

I began my quest to dunk largely to escape the reality of my advancing age. That was my plan. But as the saying goes, if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans. Indeed, throughout this journey, circumstances have thrown my age back in my face like a baboon hurling its feces.

To be fair, my journey has not been an unrelenting hailstorm of baboon shit (that's the last time I'll revisit that image, I promise). In the beginning, learning to dunk had exactly the desired effe…

The Twisted Tale of the Adjustable Hoop

I've talked about how difficult the Dunk Dreams workouts are, but ... do they work? Do they actually help you jump higher? Well, there was a moment when I was convinced I'd wasted my time. I was ready to demand a refund.

Before my first workout with Gil, I tested my jumping ability on the basketball hoop in our driveway. It's one of those adjustable-height hoops, so I cranked it up to the top, took a few steps back and let her fly. I surprised myself b…

The Workout

As I've mentioned before, I've always been reasonably athletic and kept myself in pretty good shape. Over the last 15 years or so, I've always tried to do at least the minimum amount suggested by those doctors and surgeons who make it their business to tell the rest of us how much we need to exercise to keep the Reaper at bay. Thirty minutes of cardiovascular training each day, another half hour of weight lifting three times a week, that sort of thing. I'd give them their minimum and not a ti…

A Proper Guide

At the age of 50, I decided I wanted to dunk a basketball. Something I had never been able to do before. If I was going to do this, I would need help. A personal trainer, someone to help get my legs--and the rest of me--in the proper shape to get me airborne. Now, I’ve always been reasonably athletic--Little League, Pop Warner football, my high school tennis team, that sort of thing--and I’ve always worked out. At least ever since 8th grade gym class. At the beginning of that year…

closing in on first place.

After a huge loss in a good defensive game, my baby Bulldogs are starting to come around, and play the game the way I knew they were capable of. We are 6-1 and on our way, two more wins lock up first for us, then we play out the string against some bad teams.

Dunk or Die Trying: The Journey Begins

I want to dunk. A basketball. Through an honest-to-goodness, regulation-height, 10-feet-off-the-ground basketball hoop. “Okay,” one might say, “go ahead and do it. What’s the big goddamn deal?” All right, here’s the thing. First of all, I’m white. And if you don’t believe that puts me at a disadvantage, quick, name all the white guys who have ever won the NBA’s slam-dunk competition. Or more to the point, name all the white guys who have even participated in the NBA’s slam-dunk competition. S…

Secret Key To Basketball Success

It’s simple and It’s Basic, your number # 1 secret of success will always be knowing your “Niche” and using it to separate yourself form every other Baller out there…

This is the most over-looked art of figuring out what your coach really needs and developing an Identity on the court.

What is a Niche?

I’m Glad you asked!

Your niche is how you are different from everyone else. It is the one aspect that you are great at, not good at, but great at.

How To Practice For Basketball Improvement

With so many drills and different ways to practice to improve your game, you could very easily get confused and frustrated trying to compile a perfect practice plan. Some of the main components I have always stressed with all my private basketball clients, whether they are beginners or a NBA Veteran, is to try and train smarter and just harder.

A major component you have to consider when trying to design a Basketball Improvement system is to leverage your time wisely and

Like many ballers, I have had an interesting career.

I played all fours years of high school ball for a small school in the Florida keys called Coral Shores. I developed the love for basketball at a very young age and knew right away that my life would always be surrounded by basketball.

I enjoyed a great career averaging 27. 8 PPG and starting every single game on varsity. I attended most of the top high school an…

In the old Chuck Ts by Converse and as well as the shoes now deveoloped for Olympic style weightlifters that noone can afford, because they are unreasonably priced they have cork in the shoe to dampen the impact to the knees. My show was along the same idea, but raise the heel very slightly and cushion it with some ve…
